Abstract Social anxiety is an increasingly relevant phenomenon in the university setting, where students face constant academic and social pressures. These demands can cause emotional distress and impact academic performance, making it crucial to identify contributing factors to inform preventive strategies. This study analyzed the relationship between social anxiety and psychological variables like social skills, social self-efficacy, emotional dysregulation, and expectations of rejection among 156 university students in Córdoba, Argentina, using a quantitative, correlational, cross-sectional design. Findings indicated that social anxiety was strongly negatively correlated with social self-efficacy and weakly correlated with social skills. Conversely, it was positively linked to expectations of rejection (a strong relationship) and emotional dysregulation (a moderate relationship). An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) confirmed that all were significantly associated with social anxiety, highlighting social self-efficacy as the factor with the most robust association. Gender differences were found, with men reporting slightly higher levels of anxiety, though the effect size was small. It is suggested that future research conduct longitudinal studies incorporating a gender perspective to better understand how sociocultural shifts influence the experience, expression, and management of social anxiety in the university environment.
