This research analyzed the opportunities and challenges faced by hotels in Nueva Córdoba, Córdoba City, Argentina, in obtaining certification under the 'Greener Hotels' sustainable management program. This program, developed by the Asociación de Hoteles de Turismo de la República Argentina (AHT) and validated by the Argentine Institute of Standardization and Certification (IRAM), sought to promote sustainability in the hospitality industry. The certification is internationally recognized and improved the image and competitiveness of the hotels that obtained it.
The study focused on three hotels in the Nueva Córdoba neighborhood that had not yet obtained certification. Through interviews and observation, current sustainable practices and barriers to certification, such as initial costs and lack of knowledge, were identified. Managers expressed interest in sustainability but noted financial and structural barriers.
In addition, the interest of domestic and foreign guests in sustainability was researched, revealing that, although there was a growing environmental awareness, this did not always translate into an explicit demand for sustainable practices in hotels. The research concluded that, despite the challenges, the adoption of sustainable practices could improve operational efficiency, reduce long-term costs and attract a growing segment of environmentally conscious travelers.
